Clubs

Continuing my trend from high school, I was involved in quite a few organizations. I was mainly involved with computer-related and honors-related activities, but still managed to get in my fill of volunteering. I had a great time, met some truly wonderful people, and made some friends I will never forget.
Association for Computing Machinery (ACM)
ACM WebPage
A really nice group of guys, but kinda hard to get really involved. I went to a few meetings and speakers, though.
Association for Women in Computing (AWC)
AWC WebPage
This was my main organization. The co-presidents Carolyn and Stephanie were saints- I couldn't have made it through the year without them(and their weekly tutoring sessions!) We had a lot of fun- parties, sleep overs. But also put together a huge career day for 70 7th grade girls. I co-headed the hardware commitee where we taught them about the parts of a computer, showed them old computers, handed them tools and said "Take these apart!" I never knew girls could be so violent! But it was a whole lot of fun and at the end of the year, I was elected co-president!

University Honors
I was lucky enough to get in and STAY in University Honors. There is an organization in it called University Honors Associates. While it wasn't a huge thing my freshman year, I was very active in a section of it- the community service section (surprised? LOL). We did a lot of fun things- including adopt-a-spot and volunteering at the thrift store.

Habitat for Humanity
I wasn't actually in Habitat for Humanity, but I did help them out with a fund-rasier of theirs. It was called Shanty Town and the purpose was to raise awareness for the homeless by living in cardboard boxes for 24 hours. They happened to pick the coldest night in April, and we nearly froze to death. And trust me, cardboard is NOT the softest material in the world. But my friend Ting and I made it through giant(beautiful) trees, flashing red lights, and drunks staggering past from the downtown bars at 2am. But some nice gentleman who walked by bought us all donuts and warm coffee the morning after. It really reaffirmed my faith in humanity. And it was certainly an experience I will never forget.
