100 Fun things to do Your Junior Year at VT as a Female Computer Science Major
  1. Don’t ‘officially’ room with your roommate from last year
  2. Do a Highlander: Endgame countdown for 50 days
  3. Become an undergraduate teaching assistant for CS1044 and fall in love with it
  4. Take a large group of friends to dinner then to see Highlander: Endgame at the 7:15 show on opening day
  5. Take more friends to see the 9:30 show on opening day
  6. Take a soon-to-be boyfriend to see movie a week later for our first date
  7. Try to install Red Hat Linux… and manage to after many hours and a very helpful friend geek and several removals of the hard drive
  8. Mentor a reading group of freshmen and even go hiking with them
  9. Spend a Saturday hiking to the cascades with friends
  10. Start to collect soda can pop tops again
  11. Take your first honors class
  12. Volunteer to be in an awareness skit of minorities in the department for a faculty meeting… and have my favorite line cut in the final presentation
  13. Take the dreaded, scary Operating Systems… and drop days before the drop date
  14. Learn that I really don’t like UNIX and it REALLY doesn’t like me
  15. Get a scholarship and trip to beautiful Cape Cod for the Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing
  16. See Cape Cod, the JFK Memorial, the Beach, downtown Cape Cod, and go on a Ferry ride where we have to pay for food
  17. Discover the joys of Michael Moore
  18. Make a point to watch the Survivor ending
  19. Yell at friends for being idiots and not wearing their seatbelts
  20. Volunteer at the elementary school with SWAT kids and the AGC girls… and decide that you absolutely love it
  21. Meet boyfriend’s family… more of the family than you thought you’d be meeting
  22. Go to the Wed night professionalism thing early just to be able to watch Simpson’s with some of the guys
  23. Work on a semester long project for an educational computer science digital library and do most of it in the last half of the semester… and turn in a giant report
  24. Finally start getting your card stamped at the coffee house
  25. Go see the Kind set up… and practice… and do a dozen sound checks.. and finally play a few songs
  26. Vote Green (go Ficus!)
  27. Shake your head at the pitiful state of the election
  28. Discover the joys of TV Funhouse
  29. Attend the grad Winter commencement
  30. Open Christmas presents at the coffee house
  31. Play logic games and drawing games at a better coffee house
  32. Get an amazing grade (108%) in Professionalism and wish you could transfer extra credit to other classes
  33. Fall madly in love with Harry Potter
  34. Finally get back into honors!
  35. Write a story that is so anti-business that the whole English class loves it… even if they don’t understand the ending
  36. Write a story that is so historically Scottish that the whole English class must be tactful in reviewing it
  37. Take a cool Advanced CW class with a very cool teacher
  38. Discover Italian Sodas while at Stats homework sessions (You’ve been here 6 times already, I’m not serving you again!)
  39. Have a great meeting with department head and organization leaders and decide how to build a CS community
  40. Meet your boyfriend’s friends and have fun with them
  41. Freak when Main Egg gets repainted and giant holes are made in walls
  42. Eat the best sub you have ever eaten in your life… and fall in love with those Strawberry Shortcake ice cream bars
  43. Become an undergraduate teaching assistant for CS1704 and actually get to grade and do demos
  44. Have a nametag competition... and win, even when your roommate thinks she can change the rules!
  45. Don’t even buy a ring… after all, I’m never graduating
  46. Organize the AWC secret pal gift exchange
  47. Take a small group of friends to go to the Rocky Horror Picture Show with you
  48. Actually attend two Hokie football games… and we won both!
  49. Another Birthday party at the same Japanese Steakhouse
  50. Co-head the Hardware committee at AWC Career Day… again
  51. Third annual Career Day… another huge success! With better T-shirts this time
  52. Fall in Love with Andy’s Buffet (mmmm sushi!) until they close down
  53. Listen and Watch as the beloved Capitals make it all the way through game 6 of the Stanley Cup Playoffs
  54. Go to the Outback Steakhouse for ‘research’
  55. Don’t go to ring dance
  56. Host another Graduate Tea… and forget to tell Alba to buy the tea
  57. Go to see Ralph Nader speak and be inspired
  58. Go see Tiffany in concert and try not to cry when she sings wonderful ‘I Think We’re Alone Now’ and have the time of your life
  59. Design a kick-ass electronic, table-top restaurant system for ordering, paying, and more called e-Waiter (doesn't everyone want an e-Waiter?)
  60. Decide that you cannot stand corporations and business and management. And that you’re glad you can’t stand it
  61. Decide what you really want to do for the rest of your life… for now
  62. Go through trials and tribulations with your HCI group, then give up and still come out with a great project
  63. Discover the Joys of That’s my Bush!
  64. Take your boyfriend to his first acapella concert… and try to make him enjoy it despite the Gap aspect
  65. Discover the joys of Owens pasta place
  66. Attend a really cool IBM Etiquette dinner
  67. Enjoy more Outback food, then finally present and finish e-Waiter
  68. Decide to stay on campus for the whole summer for classes and research
  69. One word: CITIDEL (www.citidel.org)
  70. Grin and bear it and take Operating Systems again… with much fear in your heart
  71. LOVE HCI class
  72. Decide that you really love the graduate culture and experience
  73. Apartment hunt and sign your first lease for your very own place
  74. Realize you will never, ever become a systems programmer and the Memory Management program should die painfully after 6000 lines of code
  75. Two words: GATOR BOWL!!!!!
  76. Discover the joys of DVD’s
  77. Come to terms with the fact that you will never get to travel anywhere in this world
  78. Have your group of friends ignore you and go to the Rocky Horror Picture Show with your boyfriend only but still have a great time
  79. Interview with many companies and still not get a job
  80. Lose my little brother *hugs, kiss, I love you!*
  81. Get offered several jobs but turn them down to do research
  82. Decide that you will never, ever work for Proxicom
  83. Decide to go to graduate school here
  84. Discover the joys of heated restrooms when your car breaks down and then have a run-in with a mean state trooper
  85. Go to the Take Back the Night March… and have it get rained out by a LOT of rain
  86. Turn 21 and go out for drinks… legally (who cares if it took half an hour to finish a single Sex on the Beach?)
  87. Take a class on Irish Lit-er-Irish Catholicism
  88. Learn that fork and join isn’t all bad… no wait, it is!
  89. Love Linux solely for xjewel
  90. Find really obscure songs on Napster (Zoobilee Zoo, Naked Boys Singing, etc)
  91. Join Upsilon Pi Epsilon and realize you are very, very glad you did (even with sexist shopping remarks)
  92. Go see the great Bob Dylan in concert
  93. Make a point to watch the Survivor II ending
  94. Smile when my parents give me flowers for the first time (and dried ones at that!)
  95. Gain a new little brother
  96. Be inspired by a woman mathematician professor studying some of the great minority in the math field
  97. Help out at the CS department Spring commencement
  98. Realize there are a whole lot of people out there you’ll hate… but that the world really isn’t so bad to have to put up with them
  99. Rearrange the room into an odd but actually nice arrangement
  100. Realize that after 3 years, you're really going to miss Main Eggleston... and your graduating friends *Hugs John!*
