Diabetes Walk

October 1999:
I’d already been into volunteering quite a bit when I came across the Diabetes Walk flyer at the checkout of a local store. Several relatives on my father’s side have diabetes, so I jumped at the chance to raise money for a cause that hit so close to home. It was an hour drive from home to the walk site, but the walk itself was well worth it. When I got to college and heard there was a chapter of the walk just down the street, I signed up immediately, this time as a volunteer. Though it meant losing a Saturday from seven to five, the benefits were overwhelming. Of all that day, the best feeling was congratulating, cheering for, and handing out gift bags to the walkers as they finished. Just the proud looks on their exhausted faces made the whole weekend worthwhile.
